Walking
Hout Bay is ideal for walkers from beginners to the very experienced. There are hundreds of walks ranging from one hour to several days, summits to climb with breathtaking views, magnificent deserted beaches.
Walking is the best way to discover the very particular vegetation of the Cape, the fynbos. It is one of the six floral kingdoms of the world and is specific to South Africa. It consists of more than 8000 different kinds of plants - proteas, heather, ericas that flourish all year but particularly at the end of the Winter through to the beginning Spring.
When walking near the coast at the Cape of Good Hope, you will observe, thousands of sea birds, whales, dolphins, seals and sometimes a great white shark. Inland you might get to meet bonteboks, baboons, ostriches, monkeys, and zebras.
For longer hikes, huts are made available by the National Park to stay in overnight.
Very qualified and enthusiastic nature guides can be hired to help you to discover the inexhaustible richness of the Cape Peninsula. If you prefer to be independent, excellent maps and guides are available such as the "Twenty Walks around Hout Bay" and the "Best walks In the Cape Peninsula" by Mike Lundy. However, all mountain walks are best done with a minimum of four people
